Lepanto is trailing by 3.227 points; and , there are 3 more weeks to go. Last week, they were able to chop the lead by 1.169 points. Could they do it again this week?

Cathay and Lepanto’s wins over their opponents this week (MHE and Atlas, respectively) could be as easy as falling off a log. The only way Lepanto could pare the lead Cathay is to score more bonus and dividend points as they did last week.

Lepanto slashes Cathay's lead

Week 16 - 28th Chamber of Mines of the Philippines Annual Bowling Tournament

Lepanto got two bonus points; but, Cathay didn’t allow them to come much closer by scoring a bonus point. Thus, only 1.169 points was chopped from the lead. It’s now 3.227 points from 4.396 points. Albeit their bonus points, they both lost one game.

Philex is far third by 18.843 points behind Lepanto.

Philex and Chamber of Mines, the 4th placer, lost one game each too. However, Philex lead over Chamber of Mines increased by 0.053 point only. The gap is now 4.429 points.

Cathay and Lepanto are neck and neck

With 4.396 points separating the two leaders and four weeks to go, it's still anyone's call at this point.

Lepanto may have higher Patterson points for winning more games; but, Cathay got the lead with higher bonus and dividend points for higher scoring.

This week, Cathay will face UPD; and its win could be a piece of cake. On the other hand, it could be a toss up between Lepanto and NAMRIA, the 5th placer. At the homestretch, Lepanto needs not only to trounce its opponent but to score higher than 949 per game.

What happened last Tuesday?

As expected, both Cathay and Lepanto won all their games against their opponents. But, Cathay scored more than Lepanto and increased its lead by 0.114 point. The margin is now 4.396 points. The third placer, Philex, also won three games. Thus, these teams maintained their respective places in the sun.

The formidable Pansun with Lino D. around pulled down FAG from 4th to 6th place and pulled itself up from 11th to 8th place. Pansun scored 998 and 1009 in the last two games, which earned them 3 bonus points. Luckily, Pansun's anchor blew the last frame of the first game and gave it to FAG with 2 pins difference only. Otherwise, FAG were in the 7th place.

Inter-Asia lost 2 games against Civic. The upset put the team down from 6th to 7th place.

Chamber of Mines/MGB won two games with a bonus point and leapt from 7th to 4th place.

The dreaded Splits

Split is a dreaded situation in bowling. What is split in bowling?

A split is a term in ten pin bowling used to describe a number of situations where two or more pins remain standing after the first ball of a frame with a gap between them, when the headpin (the "number 1 pin") is no longer standing after the first ball's delivery. (Wikipedia)

I’m sure you have made splits in your bowling. It's frustrating if you do; but, it's satisfying if you convert it. Even the world’s best bowlers have experienced splits in their games, albeit, minimal.

But, do you know that most splits have their names? Yes, and here are their names:

7–10 is the most infamous split; and, it is called “Goal Posts”, “Bed Posts”, Fence Posts, “Mule Ears”, or “Snake Eyes”

7–9 or 8–10 is “Cincinnati” or "Strike Split"

5–7 is “Woolworth” or “Kresge”

5–10 is “Dime Store”

5–7–10 is “Sour Apple” or “Lily”

2–7 or 3–10 is “Baby Split” or "Murphy"

2–7–8 or 3–9–10 is “Baby Split with Company”

2–7–10 or 3–7–10 is “Cocked Hat” or "Christmas Tree" or "Faith, Hope, Charity"

4–6–7–10 is “The Big Four”, "Big Ears", "Double Pinochle", or "Golden Gate"

2–3 or 4–5 or 5–6 or 7–8 or 9–10 is “Side-by-Side”

4–6–7–8–10 or 4–6–7–9–10 is "The Greek Church"

3–4–6–7–10 or 2–4–6–7–10 is "The Big Five"

2–4–6–7–8–10 or 3–4–6–7–9–10 is "The Big Six"

"Field goal" is term used when the ball rolled through the middle of a split.

1-2-10, 1-2-4-10, 1-3-7, and 1-3-6-7 are not considered splits because the headpin (1) is still standing. They are called "Wash Out".

Cathay's lead over Lepanto is 4.282 points only. Both leaders would face the cellar dwellers on Tuesday. And, inevitably, the leaders would both overpower their respective opponents.

Lepanto needs to play hard to score at least 950 per game and earn bonus points and pray hard that Cathay would score less than 950 per game to make their gap closer.

Cathay & Lepanto maintain lead; Jer is in the club

Week 14 - 28th Chamber of Mines of the Philippines Annual Bowling Tournament

Cathay and Lepanto have proven that they are still the best two teams in the tournament. Both teams crushed their opponents, Pansun and FAG, respectively, and maintained their places. With zero point gained, FAG slipped from 3rd to 4th place. Philex scored 6-2 against Chamber of Mines/MGB and took the 3rd slot.

Jer Cabangon of Pansun Hardware made it to the elite 225 Club by scoring 230 in his second game.
